Story & campaign
adidas treated the launch of Messi's dedicated signature line as a major milestone in its athlete-marketing history. Andreas Konrads, Senior Product Manager for adidas Football, was quoted on the significance of the debut signature boot: "It was a big challenge but a very exciting honour. To have your own product line is almost like joining the 'adidas Hall of Fame.'" Reporting noted Messi had worked directly with adidas for roughly two years across ten major testing rounds to shape a boot built around his own movement patterns and playing style before the first signature pair even launched. The "Light Up The Pitch" follow-up extended that new signature identity into a second, more expressive design built around motion and light, a thematic tie-in to Messi's game-changing acceleration and dribbling. It's worth noting explicitly for accuracy: while some retrospective sources loosely describe "Light Up The Pitch" as Messi's first fully personal signature boot, the more detailed contemporary record indicates the Red/White pair released in February/March 2013 was actually the first boot to carry his exclusive logo, with "Light Up The Pitch" following months later as the second colorway within that same new signature line, a nuance this archive preserves rather than collapsing the two releases into one.
