adidas F50 adiZero miCoach "Ballon d'Or 2011"

Messi's personal white/gold Ballon d'Or edition followed in January 2012, timed to his award win, which was announced in Zurich on January 9, 2012. Messi first wore the boots in a Copa del Rey fixture against Osasuna in mid-January 2012, and wore them again three days later on January 15, 2012, in a 4-2 La Liga win over Real Betis, in which he scored twice.

After a match or training session, data was transferred via a wireless USB dongle to a computer or synced to companion iOS/Android apps, letting players and coaches review and compare performance metrics online. Beyond the chip itself, the boot retained the adiZero family's core construction: a single-layer "Sprintskin" synthetic (or adiLite leather) upper, a thin one-piece "Sprintframe" TPU outsole chassis, and a newly introduced "Sprintweb" — a textured internal support layer offering increased lateral stability and better force transfer from outsole to upper, addressing a stability trade-off inherent to such a minimal boot. Weight remained close to the standard adiZero at around 165–170 grams, with the chip cavity adding only marginal weight when the SPEED_CELL was installed.

Messi's Ballon d'Or edition was finished predominantly in gold with white overlays and red-accented studs. The boot's three adidas stripes displayed the years 2009, 2010, and 2011 — his three consecutive Ballon d'Or-winning seasons. Additional personalized details included the phrase "FIFA Ballon d'Or Player of the Year" and "Gracias a Todos" ("Thanks to everyone") printed on the boot, Messi's personal signature/logo near the heel, and an Argentine flag on the heel counter. The overall effect was closer to a piece of personal memorabilia than a standard retail boot, despite being built on the same functional miCoach platform sold to the public.

adidas used this release to publicly mark a genuine historical milestone — Messi joining an extremely short list of three-time Ballon d'Or winners — while simultaneously showcasing its newest wearable-technology innovation, the miCoach chip, on its most famous athlete. The gold color choice was a direct callback to earlier adidas practice of dressing Messi in gold/black tones after his prior individual awards (a gold/black F50 adiZero had marked his second consecutive world player of the year honor in 2010), extending that visual language into a three-peat. adidas also opened a parallel consumer campaign through mi-adidas/miadidas.com, letting fans design and order their own personalized white/gold F50 adiZero pairs modeled after Messi's boot, extending the celebratory design beyond a one-off athlete sample into a purchasable customization option.

Messi debuted the boots in a Copa del Rey round-of-16 fixture against Osasuna in January 2012, and then wore them in Barcelona's 4-2 La Liga victory over Real Betis on January 15, 2012, scoring a brace in that match. This period fell within a stretch in which Messi was compiling one of the most prolific individual scoring seasons in football history — the 2011/12 campaign in which he would go on to score 73 goals in all competitions for Barcelona, a European single-season record.
