The Air Zoom Total 90 III was Nike's power-and-accuracy boot silo of the mid-2000s, worn by Lionel Messi through his official competitive debut for FC Barcelona and — most significantly — the boot in which he scored his first-ever official Barcelona goal. Like the rest of his Nike-era footwear, it was standard club-issue rather than a personal signature product, but it's arguably the single most historically important boot of his pre-adidas career.
Released ahead of Euro 2004, the Total 90 III was Nike's power-and-accuracy silo (as opposed to the speed-focused Mercurial). It featured an ultra-lightweight "KNG-100" synthetic upper with an asymmetrical lacing system offset toward the outside of the boot to maximise a clean, uninterrupted strike zone; a Nike Zoom Air unit in the heel for cushioning and energy return; an external heel counter for lockdown and stability; and a firm-ground outsole with circular studs. It retailed at roughly $185 and weighed about 295 g (10.4 oz), and was worn widely by playmakers and strikers of the era including Luís Figo, Francesco Totti, Roberto Carlos, Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney.
Contemporary match photography shows Messi generally wearing standard-issue, mostly white/silver or black/silver retail colourways typical of the mid-2000s Nike boot range — the Total 90 III had multiple seasonal colourways during its retail life, including white/silver/red and black/metallic silver combinations, and a white/gold SG variant — rather than any Barcelona-specific or Messi-specific design. No source consulted documents a bespoke or player-exclusive colourway for Messi on this boot.
Unlike his later adidas years, this period produced no dedicated marketing campaign or signature colourway built around Messi — he was one of many Barcelona players outfitted through the club's blanket Nike kit deal, still a teenager fighting for a first-team place. But the Total 90 III's significance is immense in hindsight: it's the boot of his first competitive appearance and his first official goal for the club that would define his career.
